CSA A440-4 Window Door and Skylight Installation

CAN/CSA A440 4 is the new Canadian high exposure fenestration installation standard. This standard has been extensively rewritten and updates many of the previous standards that have been released over the years to reflect changes in materials and installation techniques.

General Requirements

The purpose of this standard is to establish minimum requirements for the installation of fenestration products, including windows, doors, and unit skylights in buildings that are four or more stories in height or have multiple occupancies. This includes buildings of all types, including residential and non-residential structures.

Installing factory-assembled windows, exterior doors, and unit skylights is included in this Standard for the first time.

All pre-assembled windows, doors and skylights are required to be installed to the manufactures installation instructions. When the installation cannot be completed to these manufacturer’s instructions a variance should be obtained prior to the start of any work.

Integrated Wall/Roof membranes and Flashings

For walls incorporating windows and doors, the interfaces of these wall or roof components must be sealed to the outside air barrier and vapour barriers that comply with the current Building Code of Canada (NBC). In addition, all openings that incorporate a window, door or skylight shall be flashed to create a weather resistive barrier per NBC Section 9.27.

The REDZONE 25 self-adhesive membrane by RESISTO is the right choice for compliance with CAN/CSA A440-4 and NBC(2019AE). Made of reinforced elastomer bitumen and trilaminate woven polyethylene, this membrane seals around doors and windows, eliminating drafts and water infiltration from the bottom flashing to the window or door frame.

Requirements for anchors, flexible and rigid flashing materials, insulating materials, sealants and backer rods, shims, tapes, wood blocking and water resistive barriers are also addressed in this Standard. The design loads and effects to be considered include wind loads, driving rain wind pressure, guard loads and seismic loads.

During construction, field performance testing and installation field review should be performed to confirm that the product meets the applicable performance requirement. This can be accomplished using laboratory testing for glass fall-out; mock-up testing and/or testing in the field to ensure that the product meets the rated performance of the North American fenestration standard.

The installation of a factory-assembled unit skylight requires additional requirements for ventilation, air infiltration, and the integrity of the product. These include a sealant that is compatible with the material being used.

CAN/CSA A440-4 is a comprehensive standard for fenestration installation and addresses a wide range of fenestration products, ensuring that the product is installed to the highest standards. It covers everything from the selection of a window and its ancillaries to the installation process, and it is available online at the ANSI Webstore.
